The Egyptian easternmost of egyptian governorates. Located 525 km north Cairo on the northern coast and overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Matrouh is distinguished with its beautiful, white sand beaches and crystal clear water. The series rock formation acts as a natural barrier and wave breaker making the water tranquil and calm. In ancient times Marsa Matrouh was called "Amounea" as it was the gateway to Siwa, home to a temple dedicated to the god "Amoun." Old references mention that Alexander the great was the one who built it.
During Alexander the great expedition he stopped to pay tribute to God Amun and thus his rule becomes a historic continuation of the Pharaohs.
Dining and Sleeping
There are many hotels in Matrouh. Hotels within the city of Matrouh are not of a very high standard, but they offer clean and comfortable place to sleep in. some new resorts are being established that are of an international high standard such as Almaz hotel. In summer the hotels are overbooked and it is very difficult to find a place unless you make a reservation in advance. Some flats are for rent which are clean with a sea view and very good in price. There are plenty of restaurants and eateries in Matrouh that offer good food at cheap prices. Coffee shops and cafeterias are available getting very crowded in summer. Some international fast food chains opened in Marsa Matrouh like Pizza Hut and Mc Donald’s but they open only in summer.
