Aswan is a city located in upper Egypt 800 km from Cairo. It is the 3rd biggest town in Egypt today and the biggest one in upper Egypt. Aswan was once an important trade center and the gate to Africa. After the building of the High Dam Aswan became an important industrial center and many heavy industries are based there, the city is a major mining area for aluminum and iron. Aswan is internationally known as a winter resort because of its warm and dry climate all through the year although in summer it is quite hot. Aswan is also among the very famous cities on the map for the tourists to visit besides Cairo and luxor. The city of Aswan is small, you can take a walk along the Cornish of the Nile and sea the sailing boats pass by in a magnificent view. The Nile in Aswan is at its most beautiful, flowing through amber desert and granite rocks, round emerald islands covered in palm groves and tropical plants.
History
Known by ancient Egyptians as Swen which means the market. Aswan for centuries was considered a gateway to Africa where many expeditions to explore Africa started from Aswan. It was a trading route between southern lands and Egypt where slaves, gold and ivory passed by. The copts called in Souan which means trade from which the present name is derived. In ancient times Aswan was the center for granite extractions which was used to build the colossal, obelisks, statues and temples all through Egypt. The stones of the pyramids was believed to be extracted from Aswan. The town was also a military station for the Egyptian rulers. In Potelmic times they took Yeb or elephantine Island south Aswan as a major trade center between Nubia and Africa and it was a base to enter Nubia, Sudan and Central Africa. Yeb in Nubian language stands for elephant that’s why the Greeks called it Elephantine Island.
